Dr. Winarick published an article on Psychology Everywhere, discussing Avoidant Personality Disorder and available treatment. Avoidant Personality Disorder does not come from enjoying being alone, but rather, intense fears of rejection, inadequacy, and sensitivity to criticism. He writes,
An important distinction between an introvert and a person suffering from AvPD is the motivation and outcome of avoiding social situations. […] We all have uncomfortable moments with people sometimes, but we don’t avoid others to the point that we become isolated as a result. This can happen for a person with AvPD.
Treatment for AvPD is available. Therapy can help you build stronger relationships, feel less sensitive to criticism, and help reduce and prevent anxiety and depression.
